A Community Approach to Health for People and Pets

The Science Behind the Human- Animal Connection

At Lombard Veterinary Hospital Rehabilitation, we embrace the One Health approach, recognizing the powerful link between human and pet health. A fascinating 2021 study in the Netherlands explored this connection in a unique way—examining the mutual benefits of weight loss programs for both dogs and their owners.

The study found that when pet owners and their dogs participated in structured weight loss programs together, both saw greater success compared to individual efforts. On average, owners in the combined program lost 2.6% of their body weight, while their dogs lost an average of 3.7%.

Interestingly, even in trials that focused solely on dog-centered weight loss, the owners still saw personal benefits. In these cases, dogs experienced an 8.0% reduction in body weight, and their owners lost about 2.5%. This suggests that supporting your dog’s health can naturally lead to improved human health outcomes as well.

One of the most impactful changes noted in the study was increased awareness among pet parents. Participants became more conscious of both their own and their dog’s weight, leading to better food choices, portion control, and more consistent exercise routines. These improved habits contributed to successful weight management for both species.

Key Findings

  1. Owners and pets who participated together in weight loss programs saw greater success.
  2. In the owner + dog group, owners lost 2.6% of their body weight on average, while dogs lost 3.7% of theirs.
  3. In the dog-centered trial, dogs lost 8.0% of their body weight, and their owners lost 2.5%.

What This Means for You and Your Dog

When you take steps to improve your dog’s health—especially through structured weight management or pet rehabilitation programs—you’re also supporting your own well-being. The study confirms that joint weight loss efforts not only benefit your dog’s longevity and quality of life but can also inspire meaningful lifestyle changes for the entire household. Whether it’s swapping in healthier treats or going on longer daily walks, the journey toward a healthier pet often brings lasting health improvements to pet parents, too.

If your dog is overweight or you're looking to establish a more active routine, talk to your veterinarian about personalized pet weight loss programs. It might just be the motivation you both need for a healthier, happier life.

A Community Approach to Health for People and Pets

Movement is medicine—for both people and dogs. As a physical therapist and canine rehabilitation specialist, I know that regular exercise plays a crucial role in preventing injuries, maintaining joint health, and improving overall well-being. That’s why I’m excited to share that Lombard Veterinary Hospital is launching a Run-Walk Club—a fun and supportive way for both humans and their four-legged companions to get moving together.

What is a Run-Walk Club?

A run-walk club is exactly what it sounds like: a community of people who combine running and/or walking in intervals to maximize the benefits of exercise while reducing the risk of injury. This method is beginner-friendly and provides a fantastic way to ease into a more active lifestyle.

And the best part? It’s for both you and your dog.

Why Walk-Run Intervals Are Great for You and Your Dog

1. Gentle on Joints

Alternating between walking and running during exercise sessions gives you and your dog’s body a chance to rest and recover between bursts of activity. This approach is especially beneficial for dogs who are overweight or just starting a new fitness routine. These low-impact breaks help minimize stress on joints and muscles, reducing the risk of overuse injuries like strains or sprains. Gradually increasing endurance through gentle, joint-friendly dog exercise is essential to long-term success and mobility—especially for senior dogs or breeds prone to orthopedic issues.

2. Boosts Cardiovascular Health

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to support heart health, and it’s true for both pets and their people. Running and walking intervals help improve cardiovascular endurance by strengthening the heart and lungs over time. For dogs, consistent aerobic exercise helps combat pet obesity and decreases the risk of conditions like heart disease and diabetes. For humans, these benefits mirror those of traditional cardio workouts, making this a win-win for both ends of the leash.

3. Supports Mental Well-Being

Exercise benefits not only physical health but also supports mental well-being. Exercise triggers the release of feel-good endorphins that help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. For dogs, the mental stimulation from exploring new routes, encountering unfamiliar scents, and meeting other dogs or people provides valuable enrichment. This kind of stimulation helps prevent boredom-related behaviors like chewing, barking, or digging while promoting a calm, contented mindset.

4. Strengthens the Human-Animal Bond

Regular shared activities like walk-run intervals strengthen the connection between you and your pet. These moments of teamwork and mutual enjoyment foster trust and deepen your relationship. Many pet owners find that exercising with their dog not only increases motivation and consistency but also adds joy and purpose to their fitness routine. Having a workout partner who’s always excited to go out can turn healthy habits into cherished rituals that benefit the whole household.

The Power of Community

One of the most important aspects of a run-walk club is community. Exercising with a group fosters support, encouragement, and accountability. When you know others are counting on you to show up, you’re more likely to stay committed to your goals.
