That’s why we strongly promote year-round, comprehensive parasite protection for all of our canine and feline patients. Prevention is always better than treatment, and our goal is to stop these diseases before they start.
Affordable, Comprehensive Protection
We believe that protection should be both safe and affordable. At Lombard Veterinary Hospital, most dogs can be fully protected from heartworm, intestinal parasites, fleas, and ticks for just $28 to $38 per month. With our current in-hospital pricing, we are actually more affordable than Chewy, and we’re including a free gift while supplies last.
Pills or Shot? You Decide
When it comes to heartworm prevention, we offer two effective options: Sentinel Spectrum and ProHeart 12.
Sentinel Spectrum is a monthly chewable tablet that protects against heartworms, flea eggs and larvae, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. It’s a great choice for families who can reliably give monthly medication. If you choose this option, we recommend bringing in a fecal sample once or twice per year to check for intestinal parasites.
ProHeart 12 is an injectable heartworm preventative that lasts a full 12 months and clears hookworms at the time of administration. It is perfect for pet owners who have trouble remembering to give monthly doses. For dogs on ProHeart 12, we recommend checking fecal samples three to four times per year, with treatment as recommended by your veterinarian.
Flea and Tick Protection
For flea and tick control, our primary recommendation is Bravecto. Bravecto is a chewable tablet given every 3 months for adult dogs and monthly for puppies. A convenient 12-month injection form of Bravecto is also coming soon.
Other options include the Seresto collar, which provides 8 months of continuous protection, as well as topical spot-on products. At Lombard Veterinary Hospital, we favor products with longer dosing intervals, because they encourage better compliance. Many pet owners only treat for fleas and ticks after seeing pests, but by that point, the infestation has already begun. Regular, year-round use is the key to prevention.
